When Adrian & Rosemary lay the foundations oftheir home it was located in the north east corner of a 6 acre meadow where they were visited by a heard of grazing cattle every now and then, a wonderful and unique experience to say the least! With an unfinished house and garden they took it upon themselves to create an environment that would be wild and welcoming at the same time. After the foundations of the idea were established all they needed was a name to go with the idea and while Adrian was travelling in the USA he came across a place called Foggy Bottom and he thought to himself that the name suited his family's new home, so from there, the name has stuck and has been the centre of their family's life.
Adrian has written a book about the transformation of the Foggy Bottom Garden over the decades from when he and Rosemary first moved there as newly weds in 1966 to 2023, that is a whopping 56 years of garden evolutions to enjoy and see. A garden isn't something you work on for one summer and then never have to touch again, a garden requires constant care and devotion and Adrian tackles this subject incredibly well as he shows and describes how changes in weather, habitats and dramatic seasonal changes can affect the garden and how to mitigate these variables through the diversity of many worthwhile plants. Adrian walks you through the garden step by step and you witness the ever changing looks and feel of the garden as he takes you through all the seasons page by page.
Adrian was inspired to write the book by witnessing the garden growing and evolving as his family did, through his photography and writing he wishes to inspire others to try new things in their garden and allow it to evolve into the natural sanctuary that it can be. Gardens are much like young children, to start with they need constant attention and hand holding but as they grown they develop into their characters and adapt to their ever changing environment and blossom into something that you can be proud of years to come. Yes they occasionally need extra help from time to time but that's part of the enjoyment. Foggy Bottom - A Garden to Share really helps you picture the potential your garden has all through the learnings that Adrian went through.
Adrian Bloom has at least two more books to follow but Foggy Bottom – A Garden to Share is the foundation. So don't miss out on the start and take a look at his book and what he has planned next in the great world of gardening!
